The health benefits of green tea have been reported by numerous medical professionals. Many of the beneficial effects of green tea pertain to its polyphenols, especially during its processing. Polyphenols are chemical substances that are naturally present in plants. The Chinese have used green tea as an antiseptic for many years.

The health benefits of green tea seem to focus on the role of antioxidants in the body. Antioxidants are substances that "pull" electrons from molecules to eliminate them from the body. This is done when the antioxidant is introduced into the system. When the antioxidant is introduced, it acts like a magnet to draw those electrons away from any damaging activity in the body, such as free radical activity. This can have positive effects on brain function.

In one study involving rats, drinking green tea may result in a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

In addition, there are some recent studies showing that green tea can be helpful in preventing Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. These diseases are due to the damage that occurs in the brain when the body is confronted with a toxin. Neurofibrillary tangles are common neurodegenerative disorders of the brain. In these cases, the affected cells release tau proteins. Caffeine can reduce the production and accumulation of these neurodegenerative tangles.
